About the GBP to USD converter

Convert British Pound Sterling (GBP) to US Dollar (USD) using rates that are refreshed regularly throughout the day. Whether you are budgeting a trip, invoicing a client abroad, or checking an international price, you get a clear number without ads or pop-ups.

How exchange rates work

Currency rates are set by global markets and move every second in response to interest rates, economic news, and trader activity. The rate you see here is the mid-market rate, which is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices banks quote to each other. It is the fairest reference rate.

Why your bank gives you less

Banks, card networks, and airport bureaux add a margin on top of the mid-market rate, typically 2–5%, plus a fixed fee. That is how they make money on currency. When you compare a card statement to our rate, the difference is that spread. Fintech providers like Wise, Revolut, and Monzo usually pass on the mid-market rate with a much smaller transparent fee.

Getting the best rate in real life

For travel money, avoid airport counters. For online purchases in a foreign currency, always pay in the local currency, not your home currency, so your card provider handles the conversion instead of the merchant. For business invoicing, a multi-currency account often saves the most.

Frequently asked questions

How often are the rates updated?
We refresh rates several times a day from public reference sources. For a small purchase this is more than accurate enough. For large transfers, always check the exact rate your provider will apply at the moment of transfer.
Can I rely on this rate for a big transfer?
Use it as a reference, not as the final rate. Providers add their own margin, and the rate itself moves. For anything significant, request a live quote from your bank or transfer service.
Is the GBP to USD rate always the same as USD to GBP in reverse?
Mathematically yes, at the mid-market rate they are exact reciprocals. In practice a provider quotes slightly different buy and sell rates in each direction to build in their margin.
