About the Salary Converter converter

Job adverts quote pay differently, some annual, some hourly, some monthly, and comparing them is harder than it should be. This converter turns any figure into every other, based on standard UK working hours, so you can compare offers on the same terms.

Assumptions we use

By default we assume a full-time week of 37.5 hours, 52 paid weeks a year, and 12 monthly pay periods. That gives 1,950 working hours a year. If your contract is different (part-time, shift, 40-hour week), adjust the inputs so the conversion matches your reality.

Gross vs take-home

This calculator works in gross pay, the number before tax and National Insurance. Your take-home in the UK is typically 20–30% lower once Income Tax, NI, student loan repayments, and pension contributions are deducted. For a proper net figure use an HMRC-compliant PAYE calculator.

Using it for a pay rise or new offer

The clearest way to weigh two offers is to convert both to an hourly rate. A £45,000 salaried role at 40 hours a week is often less than a £22/hour contract role when you include the extra weekly hours, so always compare like for like.

Frequently asked questions

Is £30,000 a good salary in the UK?
It is broadly in line with the UK median full-time salary. Whether it is comfortable depends heavily on region, housing costs, and household size.
How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary quickly?
Multiply the hourly rate by 2,000 for a rough full-time figure. £15/hour is around £30,000/year. It is not exact but is close enough for a first look.
